Everywhere you look there are advertisements for the latest weight loss diets that promise to make losing those extra pounds simple and fun. We have seen them all; the Atkins Plan, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, low fat diets, low carb diets, cookie diets, cabbage soup diets, and even the old grapefruit diet has come around again. How can you possibly choose when they are sometimes so radically different? Should you give up fat or carbs? It really depends on the individual and I think most doctors would tell you to skip anything that severely limits calories or eliminates entire food groups.
The simple truth is that there is no easy way to lose excess weight. There are no miracles that will have you ready to wear a skimpy swimsuit in a matter of months. Ill bet if were honest we know we did not gain the extra twenty or fifty pounds overnight so it makes sense that we will not lose it overnight either. This is especially true if you are over forty. Your metabolism slows down and losing weight is real work.
A lot of doctors have changed their thinking about what a healthy diet should be. Many are focusing more on body mass index and waist size and less on what your weight is. There is less calorie counting these days and more focus on portion size and not many foods are off limits in moderation. Of course if you know a certain food will trigger a binge, you should probably not have it in the house. These days you dont have to feel deprived and munch on raw veggies while your friends eat pizza; you just have to make small changes and better choices. You will not lose weight overnight, but studies show that people who starve themselves quickly regain the lost pounds once the diet is over.
Talk with your doctor and get some help in developing an eating plan that will work for you. Combined with exercise, youll achieve a slower steady weight loss that will easy to maintain once you change your bad habits. It wont be a weight loss diet but a healthy lifestyle change.
